In Diablo 4, the proposed Season 16 War Plans system is most useful when you have a clear endgame shortage, not when you expect it to guarantee a specific drop. A category-focused setup can steer runs toward gear or materials, while browsing Diablo IV Items can be a separate route to weigh for a weak slot; neither choice promises an exact effect or quality tier. Because these are PTR details, treat availability and values as provisional.
Start With the Bottleneck, Not the Node
War Plans Tactics asks you to choose both the activities you run and the reward categories you favor. Proposed activity nodes include Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons, with up to three points for a node; one point in either activity also opens a related choice for Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons.
That first point affects access as well as reward direction, while additional points deepen an activity preference. Invest in content your character can finish consistently: an attractive route has little practical value if its demands leave runs incomplete. That is a planning test, not evidence that one activity pays more.
Compare a Slot Fix With Supply Growth
Set reward points against a specific need rather than a general wish for better loot. Equipment choices cover weapons, armor, jewelry, and Talismans; other options include Obducite, salvage, gems, gold, activity keys, and Horadric Cube materials. None guarantees a particular item or quality tier.
Compare an equipment focus with a materials focus by asking what each addresses, what it leaves aside, and what would count as progress. The table is a decision aid, not a prediction of reward frequency.
| Plan | Useful when | Main tradeoff | Review signal | | Equipment focus | Weak slot limits progress | Less focus on supplies | Relevant gear appears | | Materials focus | Upgrades need supplies | Less direct slot focus | Needed supplies accumulate | Choose equipment when a particular slot is holding the character back and a category-level chance is worthwhile. Choose materials when current gear is serviceable but supplies are slowing upgrades; that route is less direct for filling a slot, and only helps if you have a use for the materials.
Make Marks Pay for a Real Change
War Plans adjustments have a switching cost, so test a setup before changing it again. Completing and turning in War Plans is described as the source of Marks of Wisdom, which replace gold for adjusting Tactics and individual activity trees. The stated PTR limit is 20 marks, so treat it as provisional and track your balance.
Keep the trial clear enough to learn from. After several completed plans, review the activities, available categories, and rewards you actually received instead of reacting to one standout drop or poor run.
Write down the shortage your current allocation is meant to address.
Keep the activity choice steady while you assess its reward direction.
Change one part of the setup at a time so the next review stays useful.
Marks are most valuable when they let you adapt to a real change in need. Spending them after every uneven session makes it harder to tell whether the plan missed its target or the sample was simply small.
Keep Boons on a Separate Budget
Tyrael's Boons are a separate decision from War Plans Tactics, not another way to secure a named drop. The proposed paths are Curious Addition, Merchant of Mystery, Scent of Gold, and Trash for Treasure, with benefits spanning item quality, merchant caches, gold, experience, and crafting resources. The described structure offers up to 132 points.
Reassigned points are listed at 5,000,000 gold each, so weigh that cost against the benefit you expect from a revised path. A shortage of materials gives you a different reason to consider a resource benefit than a need for experience, and your priorities may shift as the character develops.
Run several War Plans before changing your allocation, then reconsider it when the same shortage remains or your activity choice no longer fits your character. If the gap is a gear slot and you prefer a separate acquisition route, compare cheap Diablo IV Items with another farm cycle before committing more time or gold.
